
Bulgarian damask rose, grown in an extensive area called the "Rose Valley", is gathered only in May and June with high humidity. In order to keep rose scent, people carefully pick roses as a bud from early in the morning. Then, the rose buds are distilled in the traditional steam distillation method. The top layer of the distilled liquid is called "Otto of Rose" or "Rose Otto", the rarest rose oil. For 1kg Rose Otto, as much as 3.5 ton rose buds are needed.
The distilled water remained in the oil refining is rose water, which contains scent and components of damask rose.
